Recorder Karate

Play your recorder with an accompaniment!

by Peg Phelps

Recorder Karate is the testing program I use to access the skills your children have on the recorder. There are 9 levels of Recorder Karate. Once we have mastered the first two songs, each child then is allowed to test at their individual rate. As the student passes a song, they receive a colored string to match the level they passed. Of course, our goal is to get a black belt - just like real karate.

Depending on our class schedule, and up coming concerts we usually wait to start testing until after the program. We do run through the songs in class but the majority of the rehearsal on the songs are your child's responsiblity.

They should be able to play the song through by themselves with less than 2 mistakes. If they do that, they receive a string and its on to the next song!

Your child has each of these songs in their folder. Have them play for you - they love to entertain AND it's good practice.

If your child goes to the following website, there are accompaniments to each of the Recorder Karate songs. The user name is karate. I can't give the password out over the internet, but each of them should have it on their folders. Have fun!  Mrs. Phelps
